Heartworms are tiny, thin and thread-like parasites which usually live in the arteries of the lungs. How do such parasitic heartworms get themselves transfer from one host to another? The eggs and larvae of heartworms can get transfer from one dog to another via mosquitoes. You will expect a rise in such infections during hotter season since these heartworms require warmth to survive. When a mosquito bite an infected dog, it will carry with it the young of the heartworms in its salivary glands and when it bite another dog, the heartworms will land themselves in the healthy dog’s body.

The larvae of the heartworms will grow in 1 to 2 weeks after being carried to another dog. Gradually, the larval heartworms will start to molt under the skin at which the mosquito has bitten. From there, the larval will travel to the other body parts like the chest and abdomen where you will expect them to stay there for 45 to 60 days since the infection. Before maturity, the heartworms will continue to molt and then penetrate themselves into the blood vessels of the dog so as to carry them to the heart. Most of these heartworms will land themselves in the heart and lungs of the host where they wait till they reach maturity. Reproduction will take place and the cycle repeats itself.

When reproduction occurs, these young heartworms can live in the original host for about 2 years. They will only be carried to another host when a mosquito come by and help them to with the transfer.
